Cobblestone Square was built by high end Irish developers, Ballymore and was completed in 2014. Ballymore, who partnered with architects Paul Davis and Partners, created the first significant new development in Wapping for over ten years. They designed and constructed three residential blocks Binnacle House, Cordage House and Park Vista Tower. Binnacle House is arranged over ten floors and has forty eight apartments. Cordage House has seven floors and sixty four apartments and Park Vista Tower has one hundred and seventy flats over sixteen floors and all three buildings have lift services. When Ballymore constructed the three towers, they built them with luxury features such as natural stone floors and marble walls in the bathrooms and custom designed, fully integrated kitchens. About the Area
The history of Wapping can be traced back to Anglo Saxon times, but came to prominence in the 16th Century when a Dutchman, Cornelius Vanderbilt, drained its marshes. This enabled people to build houses there and a hundred years later, most of the inhabitants were sailors who worked in the nearby docks. The famous diarist, Samuel Pepys documented the many disturbances in the area and the fact that at one point there were no less than thirty six taverns in Wapping High Street alone!
In 1981, the world’s largest urban regeneration project commenced in Wapping with the establishment of the London Docks Development Corporation. By 1983, the LDDC produced its framework, the Future for Wapping. As with over 90% of the existing residential units in local authority ownership more private housing was seen as a key to creating a balanced community and to provide choice. In addition, the old disused warehouses along Wapping High Street and Wapping Wall were identified as highly suitable for residential conversion. It was during this time that several newspapers migrated east from Fleet Street and headquartered themselves in Wapping only to move on thirty years later to make further space for the residential developer.
Wapping is now a much sought after location excellently situated between the City in the West, Canary Wharf in the East and its close proximity to the River Thames. The area thrives with its many old pubs, restaurants and shopping facilities and has created its very own urban village.
Wapping has an overground station in Wapping High Street and is part of the East London Line. Only two stops from the station and the commuter arrives at Whitechapel where it is possible to link in with the District and Metropolitan & City underground lines. One stop or just eight minutes’ walk from Wapping is Shadwell DLR Station that can take the commuter one stop to Bank or Tower Gateway stations and just two stops in the opposite direction into the heart of Canary Wharf. In addition, there are many bus routes through Wapping connecting it to the rest of the capital.
