Imperial Hall is a landmark in the constantly changing cityscape of Old Street and City Road. Its stunning red terracotta façade stands out as a reminder of a past era when it was the headquarters of the Leysian Mission. The building is now over 110 years old and has Grade II status. It is an excellent example of Victorian architecture and has been described as “the best terracotta building in Islington”.
The building was originally designed in 1904 by Architects J.J. Bradshaw & Gass for the Leysian Mission. The Mission was started in 1886 by former pupils of the Leys School in Cambridge, who were concerned about the conditions in the East End of London and provided spiritual and practical help to the people of the East End in the days before the NHS and welfare state. The building was central to this cause and the work carried out there touched the lives of thousands of people.
Nowadays Imperial Hall is the home to pretty residential flats and lofts spaces. The building and the flats retain many of the original features and the public areas have been completely renovated allowing for the addition of modern conveniences and contemporary touches. The flats rarely come onto the market and when they do they are highly sought after because of their central location and historic character. All the flats have their own unique layout and are full of charm. There are quirky features, little tucked-away nooks and crannies and cleverly configured mezzanine-levels. The ceilings are high and the original large windows make them very light and airy. These enchanting features along with the fantastic location and grandiose exterior makes Imperial Hall an exceptional place to live.
